Things That I Love: Kenna

I am currently re-reading Blink by Malcolm Gladwell (another love post on him later), and every time I read it reminds me of how much I love Kenna.

From Blink:

“When Kenna got one of his first big breaks and opened at at rock concert for the well-respected band No Doubt, he either forgot to tell the audience his name (which is how his manager tells it) or decided against identifying himself (which is how he tells it).”

Also from Blink:

“If you look at some of the Internet serviers that store songs, you can sometimes find his music in the alternative section and sometimes in the electronica section and sometimes in the unclassified section. One enterprising rock critic has tried to solve the problem simply by calling his music a cross between the British new wave music of the 1980s and hip-hop.”

There is no good way to describe his music, except that a lot of it can encompass a lot of things. Some songs make you want to dance, and some are good chill-out music, and some make you want to just say “duuuude.” a lot, but all of them you want to listen to over and over and over again.

Things That I Love: Food Network

This is me watching the Food Network:

I absolutely love everything that they do.

Iron Chef? I love the chairman and his frantic eye motions. Also, secret ingredients are so fascinating. How do you come up with that much stuff to do with random seafood I’ve never even heard of? Who thinks of putting octopus in ice cream (gross, I would never eat it, but still)? I can’t even think of that much to do with ground beef.

Same thing with Chopped. How do you combine quail, escarole, chocolate-covered raisins and coconuts into a coherent entree? What the hell is escarole? Although I guess my meals are like an episode, where it’s like ok what the hell do I have today and then I just end up eating Oreos for all my meals. I would be chopped immediately.

Alton Brown’s Good Eats is one of my favorites. He’s so entertaining and has cool facts thrown in there. Also the cameras in the oven and the deadpan looks he gives crack me up. Most of the stuff he makes seems doable too (not that I want to try).

But as much as I love (most of) what the Food Network does, my all-time favorite and heroine is the goddess of the South, Paula Deen.

I am going to make a whole post about why I love Paula Deen, but here are the highlights:

She also reminds me of my paternal grandmother, which I think is part of the love. And she says y’all, which is always fantastic.

Now I’m going to go get a glass of wine and a box of Oreos and sit on the couch and watch Paula Deen fry things.

Kitten heels are the stupidest thing to grace shoes since the t-strap.

Kitten heels are, for those of you out there with no fashion knowledge, short high heels. If the heel is under 2 inches, it is a kitten heel.

I am a big believer in “go big or go home,” and I believe that if you are going to do a heel you need to do it right. I’m not saying stomp around your office looking like a hooker, but especially if you’re going out, you might as well go for it.

Even in offices kitten heels are unacceptable. At least 2 inches is necessary to make it a functional heel. If you don’t like high heels, wear flats. There is nothing wrong with that. I love flats. Just don’t wear like 3/4” heels because there is no point. They don’t give you height and aren’t comfortable. They are the worst of both worlds.

And the people who usually wear kitten heels are those who “can’t walk in normal heels.” Guess what? You still can’t fucking walk in kitten heels.Now you can’t walk and you look stupid waddling around like a drunken duck. There was a girl this morning wearing kitten heel wedges. Kitten. Heel. Wedges.These are 3 words that are never supposed to go together. The whole point of a wedge is to make it easier to walk in high heels because it gives you more surface area to put your weight on. Kitten heels your foot is barely off the ground, and you’re telling me you stillhave trouble balancing? Maybe you should just never leave your house or walk anywhere, because clearly you are not a fully functioning human being.

Things I Love: Parking Wars

People are really freaking stupid. People are also very bad drivers. This leads to the awesomeness that is Parking Wars.

This show is the brainchild of one of my favorite TV networks, A&E. In addition to bringing me Intervention, Hoarders, and reruns of Criminal Minds, they have now brought me the endless amusement that is people not knowing how to drive, park, or read signs.

Some of my favorite parts of episodes have been:

stupid teenage girl flipping out because she had an expired insurance card
a nerdy creepy white guy and his clearly mail order asian bride [insert joke about asian/women drivers here] who parked ON THE SIDEWALK outside their kid’s nursery school - not just one wheel on the sidewalk, either, THE WHOLE FREAKING CAR - and then attempt to argue with the parking authority that it’s not their fault there were no other parking spaces.
the crazy old lady who proceeded to follow the parking authority lady who gave her a ticket around on her beat for about half an hour until the police were called

I respect those people who don’t swear at the parking authority when they are just doing their job. If your dumb ass parked in front of a fire hydrant, or in a no-stopping zone, that is your fault and you need to shut your damn mouth, pay the ticket, and learn to read.

Also, mad props to the parking authority because that is a shitty job and I would not want to do it, so kudos to yall for being able to put up with the crazy that is the American public.

Also for having to wear those uniforms because those look uncomfortable as shit.

People: just because you spent more on a camera than I spent on my entire wardrobe does not make you a “photographer.”

Real photographers have actual skill. They can make people and things look good/interesting/eye-catching/whatever they want. Just because you are taking close-up pictures of a leaf with water on it does not mean you’re an artist.

Making a picture blurry, or tilted at an angle, does not mean you have an eye for anything and you will revolutionize the art world.

I do not want to look at your thousand-photo album on Facebook that is a “study of nature and man’s debilitating effect on it” that consists of the same picture with slightly different filters applied to it.

You are not “hip” and “artistic” for taking pictures of a dead pigeon on the sidewalk. You are not capturing some truth about society by doing that. You are actually just pissing everyone off because you are blocking the whole damn sidewalk.

The same thing goes for Instagram.

I am a horoscope junkie.

I think they are so fun. I don’t base my life off them by any means, but sometimes they have a way of being creepily accurate. I understand that is the point, that they are generic enough that it is true for 85% of the population. But still…how do they know?!

I am a Pisces, which means I am dreamy, live in my head, and am extremely emotional. I used to think this was not true and so stupid, but it is totally accurate. I feel everything way too deeply and I have plenty of imaginary worlds.

Also, apparently I am almost psychic, which is so totally true. Only for useless things though, like which song is going to be on the radio when I turn the car on, and not the winning MegaMillions numbers.

Another fantastic thing about horoscopes is the way they try and throw big words around. Mine today used the words “ingrate,” and my roommate’s used “stagnancy” and “monotony.” Vocab lessons and predictions - the ultimate combo.

Things I Hate: Inappropriate Clothing

Let me clarify: I am not talking about “inappropriate clothing” in the way it is normally used. Yes, I judge skanks and hippies and hipsters as much as the next person with a brain, but I am talking here about weather and situation inappropriate clothing.

It is 60 degrees out. You do not need to be wearing pants, a wool coat, a scarf, and rainboots.

Just typing that makes me twitch with the horror of that memory.

This doesn’t refer to freak weather occurrences, like getting caught in a random thunderstorm while wearing flip flops. This is clearly preventable - when you looked out the window this morning, it was clearly not snowing, so why are you dressed like an Eskimo?

Same goes for in the winter. It is fucking cold out. Put some damn pants on. I understand it is Halloween, and you want to show as much skin as possible for attracting a drunk Prince Charming to complete your drunk Cinderella outfit, but it is freezing.

I guess it gives me something to laugh at while I stay fully warm in my penguin costume.

Things I Love: Qdoba Mondays

The Qdoba near me does College Mondays where you get an entree for half off. This is the best thing that happens during my week.

The only downside is that it can get crowded and when people don’t know the procedure they slow everything down and it drives me insane. If you can’t order quickly, get out of my way.

For the record, my entree of choice is a Naked burrito (so fun to say - I’m 5 at heart) with rice, black beans, pulled pork, pico de gallo, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream. Then I get tortilla chips and use those as a spoon to eat the delicious mixture.

Also, Latino guys apparently love me and I have gotten burritos for free before. Thank you, ghetto booty.
